Happy Easter!

The kids woke up this morning and lined the steps youngest to oldest as per tradition.

Then they came down and were greeted by filled Easter baskets and lots of Takis!

And then they hunted for eggs inside and outside.

Showing off their loot!

Then we sat down and enjoyed a nice breakfast at the table of eggs, bacon, pancakes and strawberry banana smoothies before getting ready for church.  It was a great service today with lots of beautiful Christ-centered music.

Ella sang with the Primary kids.

And then we went to Nana and Grandpa's house for Easter dinner along with Heidi and Becky.  I didn't take any pictures while there, but Lacey apparently grabbed my phone and took a bunch of crazy selfies which I found later 😏 But hey, at least I now have photo documentation of our Easter dinner in a roundabout way 😊  Happy Easter!  🐣🐰

Maximizing Miami

Lacey has been asking us to take her on some college tours. She knows what she wants to do (be a PA in Dermatology) but has no idea where she wants to go.  So, we figured as long as we were by the University of Miami, we'd check it out.

We all loved the campus - it was big and beautiful!  And you can't beat the weather!  We loved watching the divers practice off the springboards into the pool in the outdoor pool in the middle of campus and all of the outdoor courtyard spaces.  But.... the tuition is $60,718 a year plus room/board/books is $93,666/yr 😳
So, unless this girl lands herself some amazing scholarship, I don't for-see this in her future.  But it was still fun to tour and to be able to picture it whenever we watch college sports.

Thankfully, Riley woke up yesterday feeling better and could re-join the vacation fun!

After spending a couple hours at the University of Miami, we made our way to Key Biscayne for some beach time.

And then we made our way to Wynwood Walls to see all the colorful murals and graffiti art all over the buildings and arranged our own little food tour with some places recommended by Dave's friend.

We started at The Taco Stand which was delicious!!

Checking out some more cool murals enroute to our second stop....

Skinny Louie to indulge in their specialty.... smashburgers.

And then we wrapped up our food crawl at Salt and Straw to try some of this exotic ice cream flavors.  We tried Chocolate Gooey Brownie, Salted Malted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Cinnamon Snickerdoodle, Strawberry Honey Balsamic w/ Black Pepper and Freckled Mint Chocolate Chip.

Ella 💗 Miami

Messi in Miami!  Too bad, they didn't have any home games while we were in town. That would have been fun!

With full tummies and a jam-packed day behind us, we headed back "home" and decided to take advantage of the perk we were told about upon check-in.  There is an absolutely gorgeous Trump property just up the street from our hotel.  Just over-the-top beautiful.  Golf courses, tennis courts, pools, ballrooms, landscaped gardens, etc.  And there is a free shuttle that goes back and forth between our hotel and the Trump property and we are allowed to use all their amenities, so we decided to check it out!

Shiny, happy, faces!
Thanks for the Spring Break memories, Palm Beach and Miami!

Our final stretch of vacation this morning was a bit rough.  Last night, Dave got nailed with the same bug that Riley had.  He was vomiting all night and I had no idea how we would get him home.  After getting almost no sleep, our alarm went off at 4:30am since we had a 7:00 flight home.  I honestly didn't know how/if we were going to get Dave home.  He rallied and we were able to get him an aisle seat by the bathroom.  This was good since he spent the flight from Miami to Atlanta puking in the airplane bathroom.  We then had a 3 hour layover in Atlanta and had a 30 minute delay.  We were able to get him some cold ginger ale and he was able to make it on the second flight.  He sat in the aisle seat in the last row of the plane right next to the bathroom, where he spent a good chunk of the flight.  Poor guy.  How miserable.  I was so relieved when we finally made it home and got him to bed.

The other hard part of today was flying over the Key Bridge.  The Key Bridge, built in 1977,  is iconic to Baltimore and spans the Patapsco River connecting the Baltimore Beltway over the River.  I have driven over this bridge thousands of times.  I have driven it to and from work every day I've worked for the past 19 years.  On Tuesday, a large cargo ship lost power and careened into one of the supporting pillars causing the entire bridge to collapse.  Lives were lost and in a matter of minutes, so was this iconic bridge.  We of course had heard and read about it all week, but flying over it today and seeing the devastation was so sad and sobering.

Welcome to Miami!

Thursday started out a bit rough.  We woke up in the middle of the night to Riley puking.  Poor girl just had the stomach flu 2 weeks ago and got nailed again!  She had horrible N/V all night long.  Unfortunately, we had to check out of our hotel by 10am, so we let her stay curled up in the bathroom as long as we could, then loaded her into the back of our rented minivan with a bag and made the 1.5 hour drive to Miami.  We got her settled into our new hotel room and then, with her blessing (by the afternoon, the vomiting had stopped and she was just sleeping and had no energy) we ventured out while Riley slept and recovered.  Our first stop was to Versailles, a Cuban restaurant located in the heart of Little Havana that came highly recommended by one of Dave's friends who used to live here.

Yum!

These roosters are all over the Little Havana area up and down Calle ocho.  It's fun to find them and see all the different ways they are painted and "dressed."

Domino Park where all the locals gather to play dominoes. 🁄

We finished our self-guided "tour" of Little Havana with ice cream at Azucar and then made our way back "home" to check on Riley and so that Dave and Lacey could make their way to....

The Miami Open!
This was a big surprise for Lacey.  We didn't tell her until a couple hours before the event.  A few weeks before our trip, we realized that our trip was going to align with the Miami Open and thought it would be really fun to take Lacey, so we bought two tickets, but kept it a secret so we could surprise her.  She was really hoping to see Ben Shelton, her favorite tennis player (who we saw practice at the DC Citi Open last summer) but sadly he lost the other day, so she didn't get to see him.  But, they were able to see an awesome match between Alcarez (#2 in the world) and Dimitrov (#12 in the world) followed by a Womens match of Collins (who went on to win Tournament!) vs Alexandrova.  They had a great time!

So glad this worked out! 🎾

Jupiter Island

On Wednesday, we headed out to Jonathan Dickinson State Park and made our way to the Hobe Mountain Tower, the highest natural point south of Lake Okeechobee.  This area is also the site of where Camp Murphy was located.  Camp Murphy was the home of the Southern Signal Corps School during WWII.

Then we made our way to Jupiter Island.  Check out this tree-lined entrance to the island!

We parked at Hobe Sound and then walked until we got to where there weren't any people.  I'm behind the camera with gorgeous multi-million dollar ocean-front homes to the right of me, the gorgeous Atlantic ocean with it's crashing waves to the left of me and nothing but sand and my five loves in front of me.  Complete bliss!

Then we made our way back to our resort, threw on our swim suits and enjoyed some more beach and pool time!

And wrapped up the evening by playing pool-side ping-pong and soccer.
